Not technically a post about Vienna.  The wonderful Glen Hansard was in town last weekend, and I was fortunate enough to bag tickets to a very intimate gathering at Haus der Musick in the first district.  He was marvellous.  I recorded 30 precious seconds of this aching melody:

Step out of the shadows, my little one

There’s a balance to be righted, the scales has been tipped too long

Step out of the shadows, my little one.

Will you step out of the shadows, my little one?

Silent river roll on, the layer is weak we are going to break it.

A bit of a protest song?  Certainly captures the mood across Europe right now – spot on. Made me very proud to be Irish in Vienna, and made me appreciate once more the very vibrant music scene here.  It really is great.

i have a new thursday night ritual.  Verien08 hosts the best poets, singers, musicians and performers every thursday night.  it is essentially a living room with a bar in the back that is converted into a venue for the occasion.  I made the (only slightly illegal) recording  on April 26. It was so hot that night it felt more like Barcelona than Vienna with the duo on the Spanish guitars.  Very Very talented.

The Wurstelprater amusement park is so great for getting nice shots.  It dates back to the time of the Austro-Hungarian empire and they haven’t changed it much since.  Really lovely.

So I FINALLY move into my new home in Vienna this weekend.  It is a granny flat in the 1st district 12 mins from Stephansplatz in the 1st district.  I am very very excited.  It is a granny flat in every sense - an annex to the main family home with some great 1970s furniture. And it has a great view!

OK, so I know lots of cities have a City bike scheme and so this does not make Vienna special.  What does make it special is that it is just the most perfect place for cycling with a whopping 1200 lanes to whizz around on.  As a way of seeing the City, it is second only to a Fiaker, which I have yet to experience.. not for long though.  A good way to spend the first pay cheque?
